Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Thursday introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha.

In a move that has sparked considerable discussion among Muslim organizations and opposition parties, the Modi government has presented the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament. This legislation represents a significant initiative by the current administration, aiming to modernize the registration process for waqf properties through a centralized portal.

On Thursday, Parliament saw the introduction of a bill that proposes renaming the existing Waqf Act of 1995 to the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act. This rebranding effort signals a broader push to enhance the oversight and management of waqf properties across the nation.

What is the bill about, key features and more

Waqf refers to properties designated exclusively for religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law. Once a property is declared as waqf, it cannot be revoked. With around 30 waqf boards managing over 9 lakh acres of land valued at an estimated Rs 1.2 lakh crore, waqf boards are the third-largest landowners in India, after the Railways and the Defence Ministry.
